TRENTON (1/24/05) -- The New Jersey Aviation Association today presented its first New Jersey Aviation Leadership Award to Tom Carver. Carver served as President of NJAA from its beginning in 1999 until he was recently appointed Labor Commissioner by Governor Richard Codey.
NJAA Chairman Hugh McElroy, applauded Carver “for his dedication to foster aviation in New Jersey, for leading initiatives to protect airports and aircraft operations while helping to deflect legislation that could be harmful to the interests of aviation at all levels.”
“I’m very thrilled to be recognized by my peers with this honor,” said Carver. “The Association began as a dream with a group of individuals such as Former Assemblyman Jack Penn and aviation journalist Jack Elliott in 1999. I was fortunate to become a part of that dream and to help create a high caliber organization to protect and promote aviation in New Jersey”.
The New Jersey Aviation Leadership Award was created by NJAA to recognize an individual’s achievement and leadership in promoting and protecting aviation in New Jersey, an industry which contributes nearly $2 billion annually to the State’s economy.
The New Jersey Aviation Association represents airports, aircraft operating companies, manufacturers, aviation vendors, service companies and pilots involved with the aviation industry in New Jersey. In 2001 the NJAA led the drive to pass the Airport Development Rights Act legislation, the most pro-aviation bill in decades, which allows the State to purchase development rights from airport owners. This not only saves airports from being sold for development, but it preserves the facility for future aviation uses.
The NJAA also played a major role with the members of the State’s Congressional delegation in urging the FAA to reopen Teterboro Airport to full operations after flight restrictions were imposed after the September 11 attacks.
